“There were some comments, but there were also so many supportive people who had gotten to know me in the community. So they knew who I was and they knew how I cared about people, and they knew how I really respected people for who they were. I’ve had women come up to tell me that they’re proud that as a transgender woman, I’m representing them in the best light. And most importantly, I’ve had parents of transgender kids come up to me and say that I’m a role model for their children as well as for them, because they see the potential of their children having a future, rather than being put down for who they are.
