“Awkward" was written about a year and a half ago with my producers Peter Zizzo, Mike Mangini, and an incredibly cool and talented artist [named] Imani Coppola. We call ourselves "The Dreaded Us." Sometimes we'll begin with a guitar riff or chord progression and I’ll start singing random melodies. We'll often record voice memos during our little jam sessions then play it back in hopes that we find a cool melody. Singing through any new song for the first time is always such an amazing feeling because I'm not just focusing on a verse or chorus — I see how all the pieces we've written come together. With “Awkward", the bridge has more of an uptempo/rap vibe which is completely different from the rest of the song.
