She looked at the other two of us and said: ‘Wow, it must feel really special to be in the presence of such strength.’ She was referring to the physically injured survivor we were with. It felt really invalidating. In that moment, it felt like she was saying: ‘If you weren’t physically injured, you’re not strong.’ Recovering from physical injury was the only source of strength she saw.
