I wanted to create a character that deviated from the idea of the myth of the perfect victim. What I really wanted was for the reader to almost be conflicted in blaming Emma, even for a split second, because we all have these attitudes so deeply ingrained within us because weâve been fed this narrative by the media and by our culture that women need to take preventative measures to avoid being raped, and if they donât take those measures, that somehow being sexually assaulted is their fault.
