I think about how, through it all, they held on. They made the people who made the people who made the generations of Black Americans living freely (well, as free as weâve ever been) in this country today. In this era of pandemic and climate crisis, of racial injustice and crushing poverty, it can feel like we have so little control over our lives and so little ability to plan ahead.
