“The white man will try to satisfy us with symbolic victories rather than economic equity and real justice.” That’s what Hernandez felt, he says, when he saw people celebrating the murals while cries to defund police departments went unheard. “If you’re not connected to your elders, and you’re not connected to people who’ve done this work before, that’s something that you’re going to celebrate without realizing that that’s a symbolic victory and not something that’s actually going to bring us any sort of equity and real justice,” Hernandez tellsTeen Vogue 97 all star reported that the new novel, released on July 10, features two queer characters, Poppy and Isabella. While the first part of the book is basically just a novelization of the events of the original film, the second portion of the book focuses on three new teens, including Poppy and Isabella, who are caught in their own battle against the Sanderson sisters, who have seemingly returned from the dead. The two teens team up with another friend, Travis, and the group finds themselves battling the Sandersons on Halloween night 2018. Sounds pretty great, right? 97 all star comes at a moment when black people in the diaspora are learning more about their commonalities. On the title track, Jidenna describes how going to Africa with his black-American friends inspired them to seek their African heritage. (“I took my crew on vacation / Accra to Abuja, amazed them / Uh, now they gon’ do DNA shit.”) Artists he featured on this record also represent this movement with recent albums, like Nigerian artist Mr. Eazi, who droppedLagos to Londonin 2018 and D.C. rapper GoldLink, who releasedDiaspora 97 all star “Monse is a young woman who’s finding herself. The fact is, half of her is in Brentwood and the other half is in Freeridge," she says of Monse's internal conflict. "We all have to explore and figure out who we are. If you come from a divided household, a lot of the times you aren’t sure of who you are, and you have to do a lot of soul-searching to figure it out.” 97 all star
