It made the finale much more unpredictable. Normally, you go in thinking to yourself that whoever did the best over the season will win, and [the finale] is more of just a showcase than an actual decision. But this finale, there were actually decisions that were being made during each lip sync.TV kd 13 bleach plaid What's really interesting about being in this position in the African diaspora is that I think blackness in the United States is viewed in a nuanced way. If I'm just walking down the street, I’m thinking about how I'm rooted in the American experience. There's an impression that people have when they hear my last name. It’s very East-African, so there is a level of feeling like having two feet in both worlds. I grew up with that understanding. My parents would say that when you enter this house, it wasn't a super Americanized experience. But my environment was very suburban and I went to predominantly white schools. I think my interests, especially in African-American stories and black African stories, is bridging those worlds and making that connection because I think our histories are really interconnected. I think with the diaspora, regardless of when you got here, our narratives are connected.TV kd 13 bleach plaid I was editing on Adobe Premiere. I hadn't really cut as much in college. "Edgecombe" was also not only a directing challenge, but I took on the editor's role in post. I actually did a Premiere Pro workshop in Brooklyn, had a refresher, and then dived into the edit. It was a really great experience in terms of feeling empowered, to create the structure for the story. There's so many versions of this film that I've made, but I think it's a really great experience of taking what was in my mind and putting it in the timeline and making that work. It was a really intuitive program too, so I felt like it was really accessible for me, as someone who didn't necessarily strongly identify as an editor-director but felt like it was a challenge that I wanted to take on with this project as well.TV kd 13 bleach plaid
