We caught up with Janet right before the big moment to discuss her first gig as a director, her relationship with Ryan Murphy, and her future plans in the entertainment industry. (Oh, and what she thinks of Hollywood not being able to find any trans actors.) But these actors also took a backseat, and they knew that. I think that’s something a lot of actors probably wouldn’t have done — if it wasn’t for Ryan Murphy’s power and trust that this is the kind of the project they should be a part of. They read the scripts and came right on with no qualms. kd 13 black and gold All of my ball scenes are, for the first time, all-male categories. It was important to me that trans men were not erased, but also, [trans people] weren’t necessarily centered back then, and the category naming in the 1980s was not very 2018-sensitive... it’d be “male impersonator” or something like that. So I decided we wouldn’t announce the category for the first time, we’ll just let them walk as body categories. I knew we’d need Laith Ashley for this, and Devin-Norelle, and Tiq Milan. kd 13 black and gold A group of individuals came together and exerted their individual economic power as a group.
