“We were at [an event]. This woman approached us. She saw myself and two other survivors, one of whom was still walking with a cane and was still suffering from two gunshot wounds to the leg. She looked at the other two of us and said: ‘Wow, it must feel really special to be in the presence of such strength.’ She was referring to the physically injured survivor we were with. It felt really invalidating. In that moment, it felt like she was saying: ‘If you weren’t physically injured, you’re not strong.’ Recovering from physical injury was the only source of strength she saw. She was totally invalidating the fact that once he’s no longer using a cane, it won’t go away. He’ll still wake up from nightmares every night. He’s still going to be afraid to go to crowded spaces.
