Ryan came into our relationship saying, “I need you and I need certain collaborators to help me make this series what should really be, which is about the community by the community.” He is very authoritative, direct, and exacting about what he wants, but with me, he’s always been warm and humble and maybe a little shaky about certain things. So we developed a relationship that was very much about me challenging him, educating him, and inviting him in to understand our community. But he also came in and shaped and groomed me — he empowered me to make decisions. He promoted on the pilot shoot and was like, “You should be a producer. You should have more. You mean more to this community.” He would never call himself a mentor, but that’s what he is. He saw something in me and he thought, she needs an opportunity. That’s all she needs. [laughs] And then she had that girlfriend moment that every trans woman knows: Candy works in a boutique and Bianca Castro, Jiggly Caliente, and Trace Lysette are our guest stars working in the store with her. It was my favorite scene to shoot. Any time we get even two [trans] girls together in a scene, it’s already something that has never been done [on television] before. In these scenes, you realize the diversity of opinion, and that trans people are not a monolith. That trans women of color are not a monolith.
